Contact wheels drive and provide backup support for abrasive belts. Contact wheels are available in a variety of face profiles, materials, and diameters. Contact wheels are available in conjunction with an abrasive belt and their hub style versatilities allow them to be modified to adapt to many uses. There are many types of contact wheels available. Examples include a machine wheel, steel wheel, rubber wheel, plastic wheel, and a chain support wheel. A contact wheel along with coated abrasive belts are used on a variety of grinding , finishing, and polishing machinery governing unit pressure and speed against a work piece. A machine wheel is used in heavy machines, which are used to perform functions such as deburring, abrasive jet cutting, and water jetting. A steel wheel is a strong, easily repairable, and cheaply fabricated, which can be painted over and over again. A rubber wheel is always provided with a metal or alloy center and is usually used in vehicles on roads. A plastic wheel meets the basic needs of a winter tire package and is available in black color with a low material cost. A chain support wheel consists of chains, which pass over smooth wheels at the top. Other contact wheels are commonly available.

Contact wheels are varyingly constructed with different diameters and sizes. A contact wheel is generally available with dimensions of 22 x 1.75 cm. Plastic wheels are manufactured with in a range of 6 in. x1.5 in. to 10 in. x 3.01 in. Plastic wheels have a load rating of 50-100 lbs. With a load capacity of 250-600 lbs, a rubber wheel can be manufactured with a wheel diameter of 4 in. to 8 in. For a chain support wheel the diameter is set to be within 4 in. - 30.25 in. with a load rating of 95lbs. A steel wheel is generally 20 x 8.5 to 22 x 9.5 with very high load ratings. A machine wheel has a varying payload capacity depending on the machine used, such as an off highway truck of 797B which has a capacity of 345 tonnes/380tons. Contact wheels have a range of dimensions of rims and other materials used. Contact wheels are designed and manufactured to meet most industry specifications.
