Surface Finishing Products and Equipment

Surface finishing products and surface finishing equipment are used to refine or roughen a surface to meet surface finish requirements, or to clean, strengthen, or prepare the surface for additional processing. A surface finishing product can come in many forms from convoluted wheels to sponge pads, which offer a range in the level of cleaning and finishing, deburring, and polishing. These types of products are used with surface finishing equipment ranging from bench motors, grinders and polishers, to sanders. A finishing product may be made of non-woven nylon combined with abrasive grain and resin to provide for a variety of light to heavy finishing.

Finishing systems use surface finishing products and equipment differently depending on the purpose of the application. Centrifugal barrel finishing uses compressive forces of barrels placed on a turret to produce finishes faster than conventional methods. Ductile grinding is another example of a finishing system used for ceramics, glass, and other brittle materials that uses extremely fine grit to minimize its penetration onto a surface. Surface finishing products and equipment are used with ductile grinding to produce a finer, higher quality finish.

Metal finishing systems use different types of metal finishing equipment, such as filters and heaters, to alter the surface of metal products. These types of surface finishing products and equipment increase the resistance of corrosion, wear, and enhance electrical conductivity, torque tolerance, and hardness. A surface finishing machine can produce a uniform finish without leaving visible transitions and shadows. Surface finishing equipment is ideal for graining, polishing, brushing, blending, deburring, cleaning welds, and roughing due to its wide speed range and high torque, which makes it an essential tool for metal fabricators and other industries.

Surface finishing products and surface finishing equipment use surface finish gages with fine stylus points to avoid scratching and to follow the texture of a surface in order to change the surface finish and improve a part's functionality. The contact point is the interface between the gage and the workpiece. Proper care of surface finishing products and equipment contact points is one of the basic considerations in gaging.
