Adsorption Equipment

Adsorption equipment is used to bind molecules or particles to a surface. This process is used in the reclamation or remediation of environmental properties such as wastewater and other liquids, air, gas, vapor, and contaminated soil.

Common media used in adsorption equipment includes activated carbon, activated alumina, silica gel, and molecular sieves and desiccants.

Roasting organic material until it decomposes into granules produces activated carbon. Coconut shells, wood, and bone are common sources.  Activated carbon is available in a variety of particle sizes.

Activated alumina is an aluminum oxide that is highly porous and exhibits tremendous surface area. Activated alumina is resistant to thermal shock and abrasion and will not shrink, swell, soften, nor disintegrate when immersed in water.

Silica gel is a matrix of hydrated silicon dioxide used with adsorption equipment.  Silica, or silicon dioxide (SiO2), is the same material found in quartz.  The gel form contains millions of tiny pores that can adsorb and hold moisture. Silica gel can adsorb about 40 percent of its weight in moisture and can take the relative humidity in a closed container down to about 40 percent. To reuse silica gel, simply heat it to above 300 degrees F (150 C) until the moisture is evaporated away.

Molecular sieves are micro porous crystalline solids with well-defined structures. Generally they contain silicon, aluminum, and oxygen in their framework and, water and/or other molecules within their pores. Many occur naturally as minerals and are mined in many parts of the world. Others are synthetic, and are made commercially for specific uses. They are also known as zeolites or desiccants.

In addition to manufacturing adsorption equipment, many suppliers offer a number of related services to help maintain purchased equipment.  These include media reactivation and dual vessel system assembly.  In media reactivation, the supplier collects overused media and reinvigorates it for future use.  This can help cut down on both cost and waste generated by adsorption equipment.  Suppliers that engage in dual vessel system assembly make sure that the adsorption equipment is both the proper fit for the user, and help to incorporate the equipment into an existing process line or remediation system.
