The chemical process takes place in an electrolytic cell that is exposed to an electric current. The water separates into oxygen and hydrogen, which are separated and captured in the electrolytic cell and made available for use in hydrogen-burning converted devices, such as water heaters and burners.

Other industrial gas generation equipment includes natural gas generators. A natural gas generator is an alternate power supply that uses natural gas to produce electrical power and are frequently used a back-up power source in the event of black-outs and brown-outs. Industrial gas generation equipment is also used to break ammonia into its constituent parts: nitrogen and hydrogen. An ammonia dissociator uses a nickel catalyst to dissociate the ammonia into nitrogen and hydrogen, which can then be used for annealing carbon steel, chrome, stainless steel, copper, and copper alloys. The hydrogen produced by ammonia dissociators is also often used in the sintering of powdered metals or used to braze ferrous metals.
