Specialty Dimensional Gages and Systems

Specialty dimensional gages and systems are specialty or proprietary gages, gaging instruments, or gaging systems for dimensional measurements. Specialty dimensional gages and systems include all kinds of inspection and measurement tools for assessing parameters including sphericity, angularity, thickness, and other measurements. The proper selection of a dimensional gage or gaging system requires an analysis of performance specifications and application requirements.

Specialty dimensional gages and systems are used to measure the specific dimensions, tolerances, and calibration of manufactured products and components. A gaging system may be used to measure finished products for quality control, or may be used to check the measurements of components while they are still in process. In process gaging systems measure components while they are in the machining or manufacturing process, providing an opportunity to adjust systems quickly. In process gaging is used in the manufacture of fabrics and sheet metals, plastics, and extrusions.

Other specialty dimensional gages and systems include functional gaging systems for determining the measurements of precision components or the quality of threaded assemblies and components. Inner diameter gages and outer diameter gages are used to ensure that components are machined at the proper dimensions. Thread gaging is used to measure thread characteristics such as flank angle, taper, pitch, and roundness on fasteners and other threaded components. Specialty dimensional gages and systems include several optical gaging product types, all of which use light to measure the dimensions or entire geometry of components. Optical gaging systems are particularly useful in high speed applications where contact with the product or component is not possible.

Specialty dimensional gages and systems are used in the physical sciences, specifically for environmental or geological monitoring. A gaging station is a facility used by hydrologists or geologists to monitor streams, lakes, reservoirs and other bodies of water. Gaging stations can be as simple as a ruler to monitor tides or as complex as an outpost with a computer and satellite uplink to relay complex data to a laboratory for analysis.
