Machine bases, supports and frames provide a stable foundation for machine tools, dies, tooling, precision instruments, or other industrial equipment. They are used with many different types of self-leveling machinery and equipment. Some machine bases, supports and frames are designed to support chemical processing or petrochemical equipment in applications that involve hazardous or corrosive materials. Other machine bases, supports and frames are designed to support grinding machines, scroll saws, or drill presses in manufacturing or industrial applications. Common applications for a machine base, machine support, or machine frame include mining, offshore oil and gas production, fossil and nuclear power general, component fabrication, and steel processing.

Machine bases, supports and frames are usually made of stainless steel and include one or more base plates that are nickel-plated, oxidized, or anodized to resist corrosion. There are two basic types of machine bases: stationary machine bases and mobile machine bases. A stationary machine base is made of heavier materials and designed for mounting in one location. A mobile machine base is made of lighter materials and includes integral wheels or handles. There are two basic types of frames for machines: machine frames and support frames. The strength of a machine frame or support frame is a function of both the weight of the supported machinery and the frame’s material of construction. Many suppliers of machine bases, supports and frames indicate whether a machine frame or support frame is rated for light, medium, or heavy duty. As with other industrial products, the selection of a machine base, machine support, or machine frame requires a careful analysis of safety considerations. Typically, a machine base, machine support, or machine frame is bolted to the shop floor to provide added stability.
