Thread Cutting Machines

About Thread Cutting Machines

Thread cutting machines generate threads by cutting and removing material to produce a thread shape. Thread cutting is a method of producing screw threads using a single pointed tool to cut into a blank (also called a workpiece) as it rotates on a thread cutting machine. Thread cutting machines are similar to lathes in that they mass produce machine turned parts. Thread cutting machines are, however, highly automated and produce high volume, low costs parts. The screw feed stock (long, cylindrical rods) is fed so that the thread cutting machine automatically turns the feed stock, separates it into individual parts, and advances the rod to create the new part. Thread cutting machines involve more demanding operations than many turning operations because they require higher cutting forces. In addition, the cutting edge of the thread cutting die is smaller and therefore weaker than other types of die.

Thread cutting machines can produce the four major standards for screw threads: metric threads, parallel threads for piping, taper threads for piping, and unified threads. There are many systems to specify the dimensions of screws. Examples include British Standard Whitworth, the British Association (BA) system, and the SAE Unified Thread Standard from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The International Standards Organization (ISO) has developed metric standards for thread sizes and pitches. These metric screw standards are the ISO 261 standard and the ISO 262 standard.
