Pulverizers

Pulverizers are machines that grind materials into fine powders, tiny shards, shapes, or granules on a continuous basis. Often, they are used to process items that are 2 inches (5 cm) in size. Pulverizing equipment is used to crush many different types of raw materials and manufactured products. Examples include aluminum, coal, concrete, plastic, resin, rock, rubber, tires, and medical waste. There are many different types of pulverizing machines. Examples include hammer mills, ring mills, double roll crushers, shredders granulators, impactors, and wood hogs. Specialty and proprietary pulverizers are also available.

Hammer mills are pulverizers that are used to crush minerals, glass, chemicals, cement, metals, or paper. This type of pulverizing equipment features a deep bin with a large, hydraulic steel plunger atop the machine. The steel plunger drops with such force that it demolishes the contents placed below in the bin. Some hammer mill pulverizers are used to crush trucks and automobiles. These car crushers are used to compress the remains of junked cars after the useful parts are removed and, typically, resold.

Ring mills and double roll crushers are types of pulverizers. Ring mill pulverizers are used to reduce aluminum, coal, minerals, and various recyclables. They have a large, steel rolling blade that chops and grinds items placed into the roller. These items, once ground, are dropped into small holes under the rolling blade. Double roll crushers are pulverizers that are used to reduce many different types of rocks and minerals. A bin in the middle of these pulverizing machines sits between two large rollers. The rollers grind fed items into the bin. As these items are ground to pieces, they are pushed out of the machine.

Shredders, granulators, and wood hogs are other types of pulverizers. Shredders are used with metal, tires, plastic, medical waste, and paper. These pulverizers have evenly-spaced blades that cut materials into strips. Some shredder pulverizers use both vertically- and horizontally-spaced blades to leave the processed material looking much like confetti. Granulators are pulverizers that are used to grind and crush wire, plastic, and rubber. Like shredders, these pulverizing machines have thousands of evenly-spaced blades that finely mince the material placed into the pulverizing machinery. Once this material is minced, it can be melted down and reformed into a new product.

Impactor pulverizers are used to break down concrete, gypsum, asphalt, and aluminum. By using a heavy metal drop-down arm, impactors repeatedly smash the material and fracture the object at points of weakness. Ultimately, the crushed material takes on a square appearance and can be formed into easy-to-remove cubes or blocks of waste. Typically, impactor pulverizers are used with wet materials because of their ability to handle moisture.

Wood hogs are pulverizers that grind down wood and bark. Using high-speed blades, they grind wood into tiny chips. This wood can then be used for mulch, burned, or broken down further and turned into paper. Other pulverizing equipment includes rubber processing equipment for low-temperature use, equipment that grinds coal for power plants, cement processing machinery, and laboratory pulverizers.
