Stairs and stairway products include treads, nosing, risers, balusters, stringers, handrails and other stair components, as well as complete pre-fabricated stairways and staircases. Treads are made of metal or plastic and used to prevent workers from slipping on greasy, oily, icy, muddy, or debris-covered surfaces. Nosing is the part of the tread that extends beyond the riser or apron, the part of the step which supports the tread. Balusters are upright, vertical columns that support a stairway or staircase. They are usually made of metal or wood. Handrails are grasped with the hand for support and guidance along a stairway or staircase. Most handrails are waist-high and supported by the stair balustrade. Newels, the main supports for stair balustrades, are larger in diameter than balusters. They may be located at the top and bottom of the staircase, or at a turn in the handrail. Other stairs and stairway products include freestanding stairs, caps, fillets, goosenecks, landings, newel bolts, platforms, plows, risers, spindles, stair wells, and wall rails. Stairs and stairway products such as freestanding staircases and circular stairways are also available.

Stairs and stairway products such as stair treads are available in a variety of plank, bar, molded, pultruded and expanded grating styles. Extruded stairs and stairway products are lightweight, corrosion resistant, and may include endplates. Stair treads with diamond-shaped openings have serrated teeth in order to provide a slip-resistant surface that is suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments. Diamond stair treads are also self-cleaning and self-draining. They have a long life-capacity and openings that can catch falling items such as tools. Stair treads with larger diamond-shaped openings are made from thicker materials for high loading applications. Slotted stair treads are slip resistant in all directions and permit the passage of air, water, and light. Stair treads with round, de-bossed holes allow fluids, mud, chips and other debris to drain away. Stairs and stairway products with smaller holes are well-suited for plants, factories and processing facilities in which oil and grease pose a risk of accidents.
