Welding Gloves

Welding gloves are specialized, highly-protective handwear worn during material joining applications. They protect the welder’s hands from high heat, molten metal, and flame while allowing for manual dexterity and movement of the fingers. Most welding gloves are made of heavy, thermally-insulating materials such as canvas, cotton, leather, metal and metal mesh, or wool. Welding gloves made of polyimide (polyphthalamide) fibers such as DuPont’s Kevlar^® and Nomex^® are also available. Polyimides such as Kevlar thread are among the most thermally-stable organic materials, and are lighter and tougher than steel. 

Selecting welding gloves involves analysis of application requirements and available features. Some applications require abrasion, chemical or cut-resistant products. Others require protective handwear that resists oil, heat, water, or radiation. Welding gloves that are rated for high-dust environments are designed for work areas with asbestos fibers, lead particles, crystalline silica dust, and other hazardous particulates. Welding gloves that protect personnel against electricity, high voltages, and other sources of electric shock are also available. 

Features for welding gloves include disposability and high-visibility. Disposable gloves are meant to be disposed of after use. High-visibility products make the wearer easily visible, usually by means of bright color or reflective fabric. Non-slip, non-stick, non-staining, sanitary, and hygienic welding gloves are also available. Non-slip clothing has a roughened or textured surface to enhance grip and prevent slips or falls. Non-stick or non-staining gloves are coated with fluoropolymers or other material with high release or non-stick properties. Sanitary or hygienic welding gloves protect welders against various forms of biological contamination. 

Welding gloves are used in many different industries. Some products are designed for building and construction projects. Others are used for environmental remediation work, typically to protect welders from hazardous materials. Welding gloves are also used in the food foundry, laboratory, marine, and mining applications. Typically, garments worn in laboratories or the food service industry are sanitary or hygienic. By contrast, welding gloves that are worn in mines or foundries are heavy-duty and often cut-resistant. Gloves may also be designed for public service personnel such as firefighters, medical personnel, and first-responders. Utility crews may require welding gloves that provide protection against electrical shock.
