Welding Jackets and Clothing

Welding jackets and clothing include jackets, aprons, and other protective clothing that personnel wear against high heat, molten metal, and fire during material joining applications. This product area does not include welding gloves or welding helmets and goggles; these products have their own areas. Welding jackets and clothing are protective apparel made of fire-resistant, thermally-insulated materials. They protect a welder’s torso, arms, and legs from extreme heat, flame, and flying weld spatter. Often, weld splatter becomes so hot that it leaves the workpiece and lands elsewhere in a molten state.  

There are many different types of welding jackets and clothing. Choices include aprons, bibs, boot or shoe covers, sleeves or cape sleeves, and chaps. Welding aprons are usually made of leather, cowhide, or pigskin. Leather bib aprons, leather waist aprons, and slit-leg bib or waist aprons are commonly available. Boot covers and shoe covers are also made of animal hides, and are sometimes called leather shoe protectors. Sleeves and cape sleeves are leather clothing items that attach to a welding apron or welding bib. Welding chaps may include an attached belt and adjustable leg straps.

Welding jackets and clothing include coats, jackets, leggings, overalls, and spats. Like other protective clothing for welders, welding coats and welding jackets are usually made of leather, cowhide, or pigskin. Leather jackets are available in a variety of sizes and may feature metal snaps and soapstone pockets. Leggings usually have spring closures, spring clips, or closure with hook and loop fasteners such as Velcro® (Velcro Ind.). Leather overalls and leather bib overalls for welders are specified by the waist size and inseam. Welding spats are stiff leggings that are worn over the instep and ankles of a shoe. Other types of welding jackets and clothing are also available.

Some welding jackets and clothing are designed for heavy-duty applications or outdoor use. Others provide high-visibility for personnel who must work on roadways or near traffic in order to weld bridges or repair damaged equipment. Unlike other welding jackets and clothing, which are often available in black or brown, high-visibility products come in colors such as yellow, white, green, and orange.
