About Cable and Electrical Tapes
Cable and electrical tapes consist of dielectric materials for splicing, wrapping and electrical insulation applications. Performance features include electrostatic discharge (ESD) control, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) shielding, and chemical resistance. Cryogenic, conductive, dielectric, and moisture-resistant cable and electrical tapes are also available. Some products are laminated to provide enhanced strength or other properties. Others have a metallized layer, metallic appearance or thin-film coating. Permanent cable and electrical tapes are designed to bond permanently to the substrate, which may consist of metal, plastic, or composite materials. Weather-resistant products are designed to resist ultraviolet (UV) light, cold, heat, water or other weather conditions.
Cable and electrical tapes differ in terms of adhesive or coating type and carrier or backing materials. There are three choices for adhesive type: non-adhesive, single-sided adhesive, and double-sided adhesive. There are also several choices for carrier or backing material, including cloth, metal foil, paper, plastic, and rubber. Non-adhesive cable and electrical tapes do not have an applied adhesive, but may be self-adhering. With single-sided products, only one side of the backing or carrier is coated. Double-sided products are useful in applications that bond dissimilar materials, and may be supplied with a coated release liner. In terms of carrier materials, cloth backings provide specific heat resistance or electrical properties. Cable and electrical tapes with a plastic backing may use plain, single-layered or multi-layered plastic sheets that are combined with paper and aluminum.
