Cloth Tapes

Cloth tapes have a woven or nonwoven fabric backing that provides a high-strength material compared to film or paper tapes. Physical properties for cloth tapes include peel strength or adhesion, tensile strength, elongation, temperature resistance, and dielectric strength. Peel strength is the force required to separate two bonded surfaces. Tensile strength is the force required to break a piece of tape by pulling on opposite ends of the piece. Elongation is the distance that cloth tapes can stretch lengthwise. Temperature resistance is the maximum temperature that products can withstand. Dielectric strength is the voltage that cloth tapes can withstand without allowing the passage of current. 

There are three main product construction parameters for cloth tapes: backing or carrier material, adhesive or coating type, and release or liner material. The carrier or backing is a relatively tin, flexible material to which an adhesive is applied. Carrier materials include cloth or fabric, felt or non-wovens, fiberglass, graphite or carbon fiber, VELCROÒ (Velcro Industries B.V.), polyethylene teraphthalate (PET) or polyester , and plastics or polymers. Typically, cloth tapes use adhesives made from acrylic, cellulose, epoxy, polyurethane (PU), rubber, or silicone. Products that use pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) and heat-activated adhesives are also available. Hot melt adhesives can be repeatably softened and melted by heat, and hardened or set by cooling to allow the removal or repositioning of parts during assembly.   

Cloth tapes differ in terms of substrate compatibility and application. Substrates include ceramics and glass, concrete and masonry, composite materials, foam, porous surfaces, leather, metal, paper and paperboard. Cloth tapes that are compatible with plastic, rubber, textiles, or wood and wood products are also available. Products that are designed for dissimilar substrates can bond metal to rubber. In terms of applications, some cloth tapes are designed for aerospace, automotive, biotech, electrical, electronic, HVAC, medical and pharmaceutical applications. Others are used in membrane switches and control panels, transdermal patches and drug delivery systems, or semiconductors.     

In terms of features, cloth tapes can be single-sided or double-sided, chemical resistant, cryogenic, dielectric, electrically conductive, laminated, thermally conductive, thermally insulating, or transparent. Transfer tapes are versatile products that consist of a thin adhesive film without a carrier or backing. Cloth tapes that control electrostatic discharge (ESD) or provide shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) are also available. Some cloth tapes are permanent, removable repositionable. Others are approved for use by Underwriters Laboratory (UL) or suitable for outdoor use.
