Double Coated and Transfer Tapes

Double coated tapes are coated with adhesive on both sides of the backing or carrier. Transfer tapes consist of a thin adhesive film without a carrier or backing. Both types of products are compatible with specific types of substrates. These include ceramics and glass, concrete and masonry, composite materials, foam, porous surfaces, leather, metal, paper and paperboard, plastic, rubber and elastomeric materials, textiles and fabric, or wood and wood products. Double coated tapes and transfer tapes that can bond to dissimilar substrates (such as metal to rubber) are also available. Dimensional specifications include width, thickness and length. Physical properties include peel strength, tensile strength, elongation, temperature resistance, and dielectric strength. 

Adhesive or coating type is an important consideration when selecting double coated tapes and transfer tapes. Acrylic adhesives provide excellent environmental resistance and faster setting times than other resin systems. Cellulose and gum adhesives are made with a plant base, and may require moisture for sealing. Epoxy adhesives are resistant to chemicals and environmental damage. Polyurethane (PUR) and isocyanate adhesives provide excellent flexibility, impact resistance and durability. Pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) or contact adhesives are aggressively and permanently tacky at room temperature in dry (solvent free) form. Double coated tapes and transfer tapes with rubber-based adhesives have highly flexible bonds and are usually based on butadiene-styrene, butyl, polyisobutylene or nitrile compounds. 

Double coated tapes and transfer tapes differ in terms of backing, skin, or layer material. Choices include aluminum foil and sheet, copper foil and sheet, cloth or fabric, felt or non-woven materials, fiberglass, filaments, fluropolymer, foam, graphite or carbon fiber, and paper. Choices for backing materials also include paper, polyester and polyethylene teraphthalate (PET), plastic or polymer, polycarbonate, polyimide, vinyl or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), rubber, silicone and urethane. Kapton^® (DuPont Teijin Films) and Velcro^® (Velcro Industries B.V.) are examples of proprietary carrier materials for double coated tapes and transfer tapes. 

Release or liner materials for double coated tapes and transfer tapes may be differentially-coated for easier peeling. Applying a different release coating on each liner varies the degree of release, allowing one liner to be more easily peeled away from the tape. Some release liners are made of paper, film, or silicone-treated sheets. Others are coated with clay or wax. Glassine is a transparent, high-strength liner material that is produced by dampening and supercalendering. Polycoated liners for double coated tapes and transfer tapes are made of paper or kraft paper that is coated with a polymer for easier release.
