Splicing Equipment

Splicing equipment is used to join two webs. As multiple rolls or webs are processed in succession, splicing equipment is often used to join individual rolls for easier handling and inventory control. As the first web nears the end of its process, a second roll is fed into the production machine. A mechanical device then mates the end of the first web with the beginning of the second web. An adhesive or other product, substance, or method for joining two materials is added, and the splice is completed. Trimming may then be performed. In this way, splicing equipment is used by printers, coaters, textile manufacturers, and converters.

There are many different types of splicing equipment. Examples include products for overlapping splicing and butt (end-to-end) splicing. Splice overlapping is a common technique in the production of textiles and tires. By counting the number of threads in a textile or measuring the depth of the tread in tires, splicing equipment can be used to join the materials in a way that minimizes potential effects. When overlapping splices are used with paper or paperboard products, splicing tape or adhesive film may be used. Butt splicing or end-to-end splicing is also a common practice for joining webs. The two pieces of material are positioned end-to-end with no overlap, and heat or staples are used.

Selecting splicing equipment requires an analysis of product specifications and features. In terms of specifications, splicing equipment is available for webs of specific widths and diameters. Typically, these measurements are expressed in inches (in) or centimeters (cm). Other parameters to consider include maximum slicing speed, electrical system requirements, and (in pneumatic systems) pounds per square inch (psi). Product features include digital auto-splicing, automatic low-riding festoons, direct load positioning for both the upper and lower rolls, automatic drive engagement, systems diagnostics, and audible splice signaling. Splicing equipment may also include automatic press stops with no preparation or web breaks, automatic carriages for web-ups, and automatic web acceleration.

Splicing equipment differs in terms of available options. Some machines include a monitoring system or motorized side-lay. Others have web guides, modular controls, dedicated splice position controls, automatic de-curlers, or auto-core acceleration. Splicing equipment with automatic in-register splicing and a minimum tail splice head size is also available.
