Strongly caustic or high-alkaline aqueous cleaners are effective in removing grease and oil from parts; however, because these cleaners are very corrosive, special care must be taken to protect workers and equipment. Solvent-based cleaners are also very effective for degreasing applications, but solvents can have low flash points and require environmental permitting. Special care must be taken to protect against sparks or open flame that could cause a fire or explosion of the solvent vapors. Permits may require that measures are taken to recover or minimize the released fugitive solvent vapors. Bioremediation cleaners provide safety and environmental benefits over these solvent or aqueous-based systems. For example, there are no volatile organic compounds (VOC) to contain with these non-flammable cleaning solutions. Bioremediation cleaners are also pH neutral and non-WHMIS controlled.
