Cutter Type

   Your choices are...

   End Mill

End mills are a very widely used type of milling cutter.  They are typically mounted vertically and have two or more helical flutes.  End mills are usually configured to cut with their ends and on their sides.

   Face Mill

Face mills are predominantly used to cut with the ends of the cutter rather than their sides. The term "face" refers to the creation of a flat face on the work piece.  Face mills often have a larger diameter than the width of the workpiece being faced, so that the surface can be processed in one pass.

   Shell Mill

Shell mills are a larger type of face or end mill that mounts onto an arbor, rather than having an integral shank.  Typically there is a hollow or recess in the center of the shell mill for mounting hardware onto a separate arbor or shank.

   Slab Mill

Slab mills typically use the peripheral edges for cutting, usually with helical cutting edges.  They are commonly mounted horizontally to produce plane finishes on the workpiece.

   Plunge Mill

Plunge mills are optimized for plunging the cutter directly into the material being worked.

   Single Angle Cutter

Single angle cutters are angled on one side to produce an angle or chamfer on the workpiece edge.

   Double Angle Cutter

Double angle cutters have two angles that come to a point.

   Dovetail Cutter

Dovetail cutters are specialized tools for cutting a dovetail groove into a workpiece, for fitting or joining parts.

   Keyseat Cutter

Keyseat cutters produce a slot, which serves as a seat for a complementary engagement key. They are typically used to key shafts to provide positive engagement and prevent unwanted rotation.

   T-slot Cutter

T-slot cutters have side cutting edges, which feed into a workpiece to produce a "T" slot.

   Corner Rounding Cutter

Corner rounding cutters produce a smooth radius on workpiece edges.

   Concave Formed Cutter

Concave formed cutters produce a convex feature on the workpiece, most typically a male semicircle.

   Convex Formed Cutter

Convex formed cutters produce a concave feature on the workpiece, most typically a female semicircle.

   Gear Hob

Gear hob cutters are used to cut tooth form on gears.  Gear hobs and cutters are ground to produce teeth, usually of an involute form, in standard American pitches or metric modules.  Specialty or custom gear hobs are frequently available from gear hob suppliers.

   Button / Copy Mill

Button or copy cutters use circular or "button" inserts rather than traditional square or triangular inserts. This type of significantly radiused edge can allow for enhanced feed rates and depth of cuts at lower power.

   Helical Form Cutter

Helical form cutters are side-cutting mills with customizable profiles.  Their intricately ground geometry combines helical flute cutting efficiency with a user-specified edge profile. Typically, the customer is required to specify the required edge profile.

Cutter Construction

Number of Flutes / Cutting Edges:

The number of cutting flutes or inserts can vary with cutter diameter, material being milled, and other factors.  Two-flute cutters are often used on very ductile materials that produce long chips, and higher-flute cutters can be used to minimize chip load and vibration.  Consult with manufacturer for optimization of flute configuration.

   Cutter Material
   Your choices are...

   Carbide

Carbide grades are much harder than high-speed steel, and therefore last longer and wear less.  Several coatings are available to lengthen cutter life.

   Micrograin Carbide

Micrograin carbide exhibits a small grain size that enables grinding to a very fine edge.  These are often used for finish cutting where surface finish is a consideration.

   Ceramic

Many grades of ceramic are used in the manufacture of cutting tools.  Ceramic grades are characterized by good wear and abrasion resistance, nonconductivity, and good thermal properties.

   Cobalt

Cobalt steel tools are somewhat harder than high-speed steel and are often used for milling stainless steel and other alloys.

   High Speed Steel

Cost-efficient cutter material, used for general application metal machining.

   Diamond / PCD

Industrial diamond grades such as polycrystalline diamond (PCD) provide very long service life, and are often used for special applications such as very high-speed cutting.

   CrN

Chromium nitride.  Good corrosion and oxidation resistance.  Used for plastics processing and cutting.  Low friction also makes it useful for drawing, forming, and extruding tools.

   ZrN

Zirconium nitride.  Typically used on nonferrous materials such as aluminum, brass, nickel alloys, plastics, etc., but can have applications for some iron and stainless steel grades.  Good abrasion resistance and lubricity; pale gold in appearance.

   Diamond

Thin diamond films are applied to cutters to increase service life and abrasion resistance.
