   Spray / Atomization (Wet)
 
     A coating process using wet spray paint or fluid coating media where a spray gun directs a coating or paint aerosol toward the part's surface.  The paint or coating aerosol is formed using a rotary (spinning disc or bell) atomizer, an ultrasonic atomizer or by forcing the media through a nozzle with pressure.  
 
   Powder Coating
 
     In powder coating systems, protective or decorative coatings are formed by application of powder to a substrate, after which the powder is fused into a continuous film by the application of heat or radiant energy. Powder coatings are finely divided particles of generally containing organic polymer or binder, pigments, fillers, and additives.  In a fluidized bed powder coating process, hot parts are introduced and the powder coating particle stick or fuse onto the part's surface.  In electrostatic powder coating systems, the particles are given an electric charge that causes the particles to be attracted to an oppositely charged part.

   Electrostatic Spray?
 
     In electrostatic coating, paint droplets or coating powder particles are charged and then sprayed toward a part with an opposite and attractive electric charge. The spray process may be airless or air assisted.  Since the charged powders in the spray stream are attracted toward the part, the electrostatic process help minimize overspray and waste. Coating powders in a fluidized bed can also be charged for the application of thicker coatings.

   Air Spray (Air Atomized)
 
     Paint application system wherein paint is atomized by combination with compressed air. System of applying paint in the form of tiny droplets in air, i.e., paint is broken down into droplets, or "atomized," by a spray gun as a result of being forced into a high velocity air stream. Shape and paint density of the resulting droplet cloud can be controlled by air pressure, paint viscosity, and gun tip geometry.
 
   Air-assisted Airless
 
     Air-assisted airless spray process is used to alter the spray fan shape pattern, but not to atomize the paint.
 
   Airless
 
     Paint spraying or application system using high fluid pressure to atomize paint by forcing it through a small orifice.  System of applying paint, where paint under high pressure is passed through a nozzle and broken down into droplets, or "atomized," when it enters the lower pressure region outside the gun tip. (Less air is used than in conventional air spraying so that the problems of dry spray and paint bounce-back is reduced.)
 
   HVLP
 
     High velocity, low pressure (HVLP) spray guns atomized coatings utilizing a high volume of paint with low air pressure.  HVLP spray equipment applies coating by means of a gun, which operates between 0.1 and 10.0 psig air pressure. A turbine produces the high volume of air. The lower pressure reduces paint viscosity, thus reducing bounce back, and therefore increasing deposition efficiency.
 
   Mini-spray / Airbrush
 
     Airbrush, mini-spray or microspray guns have very small nozzles and are used for detailing, touch-up and other precision applications.
 
   Reduced / Low Pressure
 
     Spray guns or spray equipment designed to operate under reduced pressure, while not requiring high volumes of air flow. 
 
   Rotary Cup / Disc
 
     Rotary spray guns or applicators use a rapidly spinning cup/bell or flat disc to project powders or atomize paint. rotary cup or bell rotary applicators produce a fan pattern, which is closer to a nozzle spray gun. A rotating head that is shaped to deliver paint forward in a circular pattern. The bell may be directed at any angle and be moved on robots or reciprocators, just as nozzle spray guns are.  Disc rotary applicators spin the coating media out radially.  Rotating heads that deliver paint horizontally 360° around the head are useful on an omega loop conveyer finishing lines. A disk is usually mounted horizontally on a vertical reciprocator. Disc rotary spray guns are also useful for internal or ID coating applications.
 
   Ultrasonic
 
     Ultrasonic atomization processes use a specialized transducer vibrating at ultrasonic frequencies to form a fine aerosol or mist of the coating material.
 
   Specialty / Other

     Coating outfits, kits or packages are small or portable machines or systems with all the components required for the coating process. For example, a wet spray paint outfit may consist of spray gun, pressure tank or spray cup, hose, nozzles, pump and ancillary components. Portable packages or outfits are capable of being carried or transported to the worksite, plant or field area.  They may be cart or wall mounted unit.
 
   Component / Sub-system
 
     Upgrades or replacement of individual coating or painting components or sub-systems such as pumping units, spray guns, dip tanks, plating power supplies, booths, roll coating heads, process water systems or dust collectors.

   Applicator / Gun
 
     The gun or applicator directs a stream of paint droplets, coating powder or adhesive through a nozzle or opening, at the appropriate region of the workpiece.
 
   Booth - Hood / Cabinet
 
     Paint spray hoods, bench top open-faced booths or coating cabinets are smaller vessels that contain the workpiece and/or the process. 
 
   Booth - Spray Room
 
     Rooms or booths are used when processing larger workpieces. Rooms contain the painting or coating equipment, the workpiece and the operator.  Booths usually contain internal lighting, ventilation and recovery systems.  The operator may operate the spray gun in offhand mode or the gun may be reciprocator mounted.  The workpieces often rest on open grid flooring that allows used paint or powder coating to drop through for recycling.
 
   Booth - Tunnel / Continuous
 
     Production tunnels consist of long walk-in enclosures containing continuous processing lines and systems for cleaning, coating, drying or curing and conveying or material handling.
 
   Conveyor / Part Loader
 
     Equipment or sub-systems for conveying, and loading or unloading parts into coating or painting systems.
 
   Dust Collection / Air Filtration System
 
     Dust collection or filtration systems remove fine particle sizes of overspray or other coating waste that would otherwise become suspended in the air.
 
   Feeding / Metering Unit
 
     Distribution or dispensing units that are used to control the rate that the coating media is fed into the applicator from the paint source. The component may consist of a valve, valve stack or manifold or electromechanical feeding system. Depending on the coating technology, the coating media may be in the form of powder, wire or liquid paint. Plural component coating systems have feeders or fluid handling components that will meter, mix and control the ratio of two or more different components. 
 
   Oven / UV Curing Unit
 
     Integral or optional ovens, dryers, infrared heaters, immersion heaters or other heating components for drying off or pre-heating part surfaces before coating, curing coatings or thermally reduce liquid resin viscosity. Thermal heating or curing systems can use infrared, RF, combustion, induction or resistance heating technologies. 
 
   Pump / Compressor
 
     The pump, compressor or pressure generator increases the pressure of the carrier fluid or propellant (typically air) or directly pressurizes and moves the paint or liquid coating. In air spray systems, air compressors are typically used to generate pressure.
 
   Reclaimer / Separator
 
     Separators or reclaimers remove undersized powder, media and coarse waste. Reclaimed material can sometimes be recirculated back into the coating process if the media's particle size and coating characteristics still meet specifications.
 
   Pressure Tank / Pot
 
     Tank or hopper for storage of paint, coating powders or other coating media.  The tank may or may not be pressurized.
 
   Spray Cup
 
     Spray cups are small vessels used to contain spray paint or media. Spray cups are directly attached to the spray gun (above or below).
 
   Specialty / Other

Typically, automatic guns and coating units are used in machine or reciprocator applications.
 
   Reciprocator / Robotic Arm
 
     Reciprocators, oscillators and robotic arms can uniformly paint or coat a surface by scanning a surface in a controlled and repeatable fashion.  Coating or spraying equipment mounted on crawlers or robotic arms may also find use in hazardous situations such as in containment of toxic materials, extreme environment conditions or in hard to reach places (tower, tank walls, ship hulls, etc.) with associated fall hazards.  Reciprocators and robotic arms are also used in dip coating processes to immerse and withdrawn the part from the dip tank.
 
   Trailer / Vehicle
 
     The machine can be mounted on or built into a trailer or vehicle.  The trailer or vehicle is driven or towed to the worksite requiring coating, lining or painting such as the side or interior of a steel tank, ship's hull, industrial flooring or building wall.

     Metering unit, gun or coating system capable of coating multiple colors and quickly changing between one or more colors without cross contamination.      Product supplied with or has the option for an integral agitator or mixer to maintain the quality of the liquid coating or paint.
 
   Integral Regulator
 
     Gun, pressure pot or tank supplied with or has the option for an integral regulator to maintain the required pressure within the liquid coating or paint and/or pressurizing air.
 
   Integral Heater
 
     The product has an integral heater or can be attached to one. Heating the medium allows for improved quality and maintained viscosity. 
 
   Gravity Feed
 
     The paint, fluid or coating powders are fed into the gun or applicator by gravity.
 
   Pressure Feed
 
     The tank, pressure pot, spray cup or vessel is pressurized using compressed air or gas. The pressurized air, liquid or gas in the vessel pushes the coating material from the vessel into the gun.
 
   Suction Feed (Venturi / Siphon)
 
     Venturi generators use a fast moving stream to create a vacuum that pulls materials into the steam.
