   Ultimate Operating Vacuum:
 
     Vacuum or pressure is often measured in torr, or mm Hg referenced above absolute zero pressure. Sometimes the following reference terms are used:

1 torr and above: Rough Vacuum
0.001 to 1.0 torr: Medium Vacuum
Below 0.001 torr: High Vacuum

There are other terms and standards used such as medium vacuum and ultra high vacuum; consult supplier for application specifications.

   None
 
     Option for some high vacuum pumps such as turbomolecular, where vacuum is increased by molecular absorption rather than mechanically moving parts.
 
   Compressed Air / Fluid
 
     Power is derived from nonelectric media such as motive fluid. Compressed air is most common, but hydraulic or other power sources are possible.
 
   DC Power
 
     Includes battery and power supply inputs.
 
   AC Single Phase
 
     Typical single phase voltages include 115V/60Hz and 230V/50Hz.
 
   AC Three Phase
 
     Many industrial devices run from three phase power such as 208V or 377V.
 
   Engine

   Magnetic Drive
 
     Magnetic drives typically use a rotating magnetic field to drive the pump impeller.  This can allow for seal-less construction and is often used for pumping clean liquids or gases.

   Turbomolecular
 
     Turbomolecular pumps use a series of high-speed rotors (25,000 to 75,000 rpm) and flow stabilizing, stationary stators to impart a preferential motion to gas molecules and create molecular flow through the pump.  They are often described as "molecular bats."  They are also known as axial flow turbines.
 
   Molecular Drag
 
     Molecular drag pump are similar to turbomolecular pumps except a rotor drum with a ridged surface and cylindrical stator are used in place of stator and rotor blades to impart a preferential motion to gas molecules and create molecular flow through the pump.  Hybrid pumps are available that use combinations of blades and ridged drums.
 
   Diffusion / Vapor
 
     Diffusion pumps use jets of diffusion oil vapor to impart momentum and sweep gas molecules from the system. Diffusion pumps have no moving parts and provide the highest pumping speed for lighter gases like helium and hydrogen. Diffusion pump oil can wander or backstream into the system causing process contamination.
 
   Ion
 
     Ion pumps utilize a sputtering process to ionize then entrain gas molecules and embed them into the anode or cathode wall.  The entrainment process can utilize a getter such as titanium to bind and bury the molecules.  They can operate in the ultra high vacuum range and eliminate contamination by organic molecules.
 
   Cryogenic / Cryosorption
 
     Cryogenic pumps utilize extremely cold (liquid N2 and He temperatures) surfaces and absorption surfaces freeze or trap molecules. Cryogenic pumps can operate with relatively high fore or exhaust pressures. Cryogenic pumps must be periodically generated to purge the frozen or trapped gases.

Cryosorption pumps evacuate gas molecules from a volume by adsorbing them on the chilled surface of a molecular sieve. These molecular sieves are designed to have a large surface area-to-volume ratio to maximize the adsorbing area.
 
   Getter / TSP / NEG Sorption
 
     Getter or titanium sublimation pumps (TSP) entrain gas molecules in a getter, or material that is vaporized in order to absorb or capture the molecules, and embed them on the cold outer wall of the chamber.  These can also use "non-evaporating Gettering sorption" techniques by using a large-surface-area porous matrix for entrainment.
 
   Other
 
     Unlisted, specialized, or proprietary high vacuum pump.

   Axial Blower
 
     Multiple-blade rotor imparts axial velocity which is converted to pressure; very high flow rates.
 
   Centrifugal Blower
 
     High-speed impeller produces radial air flow; velocity converted to pressure energy.  Evacuated air flows radially outward against blower wall as opposed to axially through tube in axial blowers.
 
   Circumferential Piston
 
     Multiple-rotor configuration in which two rotors, each with two "wings" that trap air against the outside wall during rotation and compress it in their rotary stroke toward the outlet. The wings of the two rotors alternate in compression strokes.
 
   Claw
 
     Claw or rotary claw pumps use precision-designed intermeshing hooked claws with very tight tolerances and clearances for highly efficient internal compression.  They are typically noncontact, minimizing or eliminating friction and wear.
 
   Diaphragm
 
     Diaphragm oscillation driven by a reciprocating or eccentric "rocking" rod; no sliding seals or parts.  This design isolates the pumped fluid from any contact with the pumping mechanism.  Diaphragm pumps exhibit a much lower compression ration than piston pumps, but frequently offer quiet, economical performance.
 
   Gear Pump
 
     Gear pumps are positive displacement pumps used to transport high pressure and high volume flows.  They use the meshing of gear teeth to reduce volume and move air to evacuate the vacuum chamber.
 
   Linear
 
     Stroke of sliding piston compression is generated with electromagnetic oscillation; clean and quiet.
 
   Liquid Ring
 
     Eccentrically mounted rotor and vanes utilize liquid ring on inside of chamber to compress air.  The liquid also absorbs compression heat and entrained particles in the air.
 
   Lobed Rotor
 
     Air is trapped and compressed by the diminishing volume caused by the meshing of oppositely rotating lobes.
 
   Reciprocating Piston
 
     Piston mechanically reduces air volume inside cylinder.  These pumps may have one or several pistons being driven by a motor.  The vacuum levels produced by this pump style are somewhat higher than for other types of mechanical pumps.
 
   Regenerative Blower
 
     Similar to centrifugal with airflow chamber designed to generate higher pressure.  Air flows radially outward along blade to housing wall, whereupon it flows down to the root of the next blade gap and repeats the cycle.  The airflow thus creates several "stages" of compression.
 
   Rocking Piston
 
     Similar to reciprocating piston but is not articulated; "rocks" with eccentric motion of drive.
 
   Rotary Piston
 
     Rotary piston or cam is rotating eccentrically; evacuates air through check valve on the "compression" or evacuation stroke while air from the vacuum application fills in behind it.
 
   Rotary Vane
 
     Eccentrically mounted rotor and sliding vanes compress air in diminishing volume compartments.
 
   Rotary Screw
 
     Two or more spindles with intermeshing screws rotate oppositely, creating axially progressing "chambers," moving the air from suction to discharge. Larger pumps often have double suction, where air is let in from both ends to a central discharge port.

Rotary screw pumps often offer good vacuum levels with pulse-free operation.
 
   Scroll
 
     Air is moved as intake air is compressed between the surfaces of mating involute spirals, one of which is moving to progressively push the evacuated air out to the exhaust.
 
   Other
 
     Unlisted, specialized, or proprietary mechanical vacuum technology.

   Integral Backing Pump?
